Few films ever achieve cult status, yet Richard Donner’s 1989 kids adventure movie The Goonies certainly deserves that distinction. Perhaps its charm lies in Richard Donner directing such talented actors such as Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan and Corey Feldman in such charming young performances; or maybe its power to satisfy your childhood quest to find hidden treasure and save the day; whatever its origins, The Goonies remains an entertaining watch even 30 years later!

The Goonies follows a group of children living in Astoria, Oregon known collectively as “the Goonies.” When their homes are foreclosed on for an expanding country club and golf course development project, these misfit kids join together in one final adventure before losing everything. After finding a treasure map leading them to One-Eyed Willy’s pirate ship full of jewels belonging to One-Eyed Willy himself – which includes his doubloon – they must stay one step ahead of The Fratellis family who specialize in counterfeiting, murdering and more crimes as soon as possible before meeting up with him or else will end.

As with other films by Spielberg, The Goonies is a visual feast. Packed with breathtaking moments ranging from watery shoot-the-chutes rides down a mountainside to underground caverns lit with orange glow-in-the-dark lighting featuring skull-shaped passageways, it features a thrilling soundtrack by Dave Grusin (who would also provide music for Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park) as well as hard rock hits that only add further delights for viewers and listeners alike.

Of course, The Goonies does contain four-letter words and other sexual jokes–after all, it was made for children–but Donner and screenwriter Chris Columbus (who would go on to direct the first two Harry Potter films) use them sparingly and tastefully; moreover, even though its protagonists are criminal hunters, their characters come off as sensible yet likeable–unlike Animal House or Porky’s where sex maniacs reign supreme.

The Goonies is an entertaining movie everyone should see. With its fantastic story and memorable characters, this flick proves that children can be as smart and bold as adults!

As for myself, I urge you to go check it out for yourself! And be sure to wear comfortable shoes and don’t forget your camera – I guarantee it’ll be an unforgettable experience that you won’t soon forget. I guarantee it.
