Gladiator stands head and shoulders above other historical dramas, thanks to its striking production values and astonishing cinematography, which bring the 2nd century alive on screen. Oscar-winning costumes and physical sets help viewers immerse themselves into its world effortlessly.

Russell Crowe shines as Maximus, but Joaquin Phoenix truly outshines in his portrayal of Commodus – playing him as an emotionally damaged individual unable to resist greed, jealousy and lust is an act of brilliance that makes Gladiator such an engaging watch. Their performances together form one unforgettable spectacle.

Ridley Scott’s directing skills shine brightly throughout Gladiator. His use of camera angles and lighting is an uncanny blend of art and science, while sound and music serve to intensify scenes emotionally.

The film takes place in Roman Empire and follows a powerful general who must become a common gladiator to protect his family from financial ruin. Although initially lowly in status, Maximus proves incredibly popular on the arena and eventually caught the eye of Emperor Commodus himself; his son eventually become so incensed at being denied a seat that he murdered both father and family before ordering Maximus to become slave gladiator training for training purposes.

As the production team of Gladiator experienced difficulties during filming, from script problems to scheduling conflicts and more, production eventually completed in May 1999 and cast and crew were thrilled when the movie premiered November 2000.

Gladiator 2 will finally hit theaters by 2022 after years of delays. Connie Nielson who portrayed Lucilla from the original film has joined its cast and it will likely hit theatres then as well.

Jeep’s updated Gladiator boasts many exterior upgrades, but the major change comes on the inside. Most notably, its Uconnect 5 software now supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity – something not present before.

An important upgrade is a new steering wheel with thumb contours to make controls easier to reach, soft-touch materials on the instrument panel, and narrow horizontal vents above HVAC controls. Jeep fans will notice Easter eggs such as markings that resemble cardinal points on a compass.
